Is Shape wear During Pregnancy Safe? A Medical Expert’s Opinion

While Kim Kardashian managed to break the internet yet again with the launch of her maternity shapewear line, there are views on both sides from pregnant women, beauty experts and celebrities.

However, when it comes to safety during pregnancy, it is best to listen to medically backed advice. According to Lucky Sekhon, MD, a New York City-based fertility specialist and board-certified OB/GYN, opting for shape wear during pregnancy and postpartum may be a good idea due to the following reasons:

  1. Help improve posture and take weight off your back as your bump grows
  2. More comfortable vs regular underwear that is prone to slipping of bunching under the bump
  3. Support for healing C-section incision postpartum by keeping your belly firm during change of posture, coughing or sneezing
  4. Additional support helps those who need to walk a lot during the day or those with more amniotic fluid as in twin pregnancy

Dr. Sekhon also highlights that precaution should be taken to ensure chosen shapewear isn’t constrictive on the belly. This means choose the right size and go for shapewear specifically designed for maternity.

In addition to SKIMS there are several other brands that carry shapewear maternity collections that help you smooth out bumps and bulges without constricting the belly. So go ahead and add that shapewear to your maternity wear shopping list.
