Borage oil is a herbal oil extracted from the seed of the Borago Officinalis plant, notable for its star-shaped blue flower. It is a herbal remedy that can be taken orally or applied topically and has traditionally been used for treating pain & inflammation, acne, eczema, seborrheic dermatitis, rosacea, cardiovascular disorders, ADHD, ARDS, breast pain, menopause and rheumatoid arthritis. It is also believed to increase breast milk production, help manage diabetes, adrenal fatigue, epilepsy and symptoms of PMS.
Borage oil contains one of the highest amounts of gamma linolenic acid (GLA) and it is rich in vitamins A, D and E, which makes it a great addition to skin care products. New mothers are often recommended this herbal remedy for getting rid of stretch marks.
However, borage plant, including its leaves, flower and seed can contain a dangerous chemical called pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs). PAs can damage the liver and cause cancer in a pregnant woman. PAs also pose a risk to the infant because they can cause birth defects and also enter breast milk. More research is required to establish whether PA-free borage oil is safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
It is best to avoid the use of borage oil during pregnancy. Always consult your doctor about herbs safe to use during pregnancy.
