Nutmeg is an extraordinary spice with a unique aroma and flavour. Besides its use in culinary dishes, it has also been used in Ayurveda for its medicinal properties for thousands of years.

Nutmeg is a powerhouse of nutrients. Right from antioxidants to vitamins A, B6 &C, to minerals like calcium, potassium, magnesium, manganese, copper, iron to fiber and folate it packs a powerful punch. No wonder adding nutmeg to food improves digestion, boosts cognitive function, regulates blood pressure, boosts liver health and relieves pain. It has also been traditionally used to treat insomnia, improve oral health, treat depression, lower cholesterol levels, treat respiratory disorders, boost heart health, keep blood sugar levels in check and detoxify the body, giving glowing skin in return.

However, it is not considered safe to consume nutmeg during pregnancy as it can adversely affect an expecting mom and her baby. It inhibits the production of prostaglandin, essential in the process of child birth. In high quantities nutmeg also has hallucinogenic effect which may be dangerous for the foetus. It can also cause miscarriage. Therefore it is best to avoid nutmeg during pregnancy and to consult your doctor about foods safe to consume during pregnancy.
