Are Omega 3 Supplements Good for My Baby?

American Pregnancy Association encourages women to take Omega 3 supplements right from the time they are planning to conceive and continue through their breastfeeding. There are many benefits of taking these supplements as these are essential both for mum as well as baby.

These omega-3 fats are not synthesized by the body and must be obtained through diet or supplementation. It is recommended to start supplementing at least six months prior to conception to build up this important essential fat. If you’ve had babies before, note that multiple pregnancies, especially those that are close together, can deplete your store of omega-3 fatty acids, hence more important to supplement.

Continuing Omega 3 supplements into breastfeeding will help your body replenish your DHA reserves as it gets passed onto the baby through breast milk. It will also ensure that your baby gets enough of this important nutrient that aids baby’s growth and development. It is believed to improve behavior, attention, focus, and learning in children as well as reduce risk of allergies in infants and a positive influence on immune development.
