Yes. Pregnant women can eat taro corns (also called taro roots) and even taro leaves without any worries. Though certain parts of the taro plant contain oxalic acid, that causes skin irritation when peeling the roots. However, though cooking or boiling removes this chemical entirely.
Taro, or dasheen, contains various valuable B-complex group of vitamins such as pyridoxine (Vitamin B-6), folate, riboflavin, pantothenic acid, and thiamin. The leaves are a good source of vitamins A and C and contain more protein than the corms.
Folate helps prevent birth defects such as spina bifida in the growing fetus.
It is also a good source of dietary fibre and hence recommended as a safe food to eat during pregnancy.
Other plant roots such as lotus roots are also safe to consume during pregnancy.
