Tuna salad is made with tuna and mayonnaise. Mayonnaise contains raw egg and raw items are best avoided during pregnancy. However, the main ingredient in a tuna salad is tuna, and there is still no concrete classifaction of tuna as safe or unsafe during pregnancy. There are various types of tuna, and each type has different safety levels depending on its mercury level. Eating tuna salad excessively can lead to accumulation of mercury in the mother’s system and thereby cause brain and nervous damage, and lead to physical deformities in the baby. The fat and calorific content of mayyonnaise adds to weight gain.
Since large fish like tuna contains higher than normal mercury levels, pregnant women should either avoid eating it completely, or stay within the suggested weekly limits if you enjoy tuna salad.
